Gurney, Jr. The cutting edge of his humor is his insistence on the commonplaceness of suffering in the world. His plays are populated by archetypal sadists and victims, and the comedy is usually cruel as the audience is made to laugh at the exaggerated and grotesque misery of the characters and nearly always violent; death, suicide, disaster, and murder are never too far away in typical Durang slapstick. While his plays are repeatedly criticized for not being positive and for not suggesting any remedy to the problem of human evil, they are in fact relentlessly moral, fueled by a profound sense of outrage at the crimes against human dignity. If his endings seem less than perfectly conclusive, and if his characters seem to be no more than cartoons, still, underneath all the madcap and sophomoric nonsense is a serious and humane plea for tolerance, diversity, and individual liberty. This figure embodies for Durang all the evil elements of human nature and social hierarchy.

Shelves: beautiful , drivelly , favorites , laughing-wild , theatre Christopher Durang is one of my biggest playwriting inspirations, and this collection provides a fantastic look into his progress and process. The plays are, in most cases, extremely short, and a quick and valuable read for any student actor on the hunt for scene work or monologues. Durang has his own brilliant, acerbic voice--shades of Orton perhaps, in the outrageous violence, but decidedly American and decidedly theatrical.

Even his short plays deal with major Durangian themes. Excellent pieces, funny and poignant, some totally insane, some perfect examples of the short play form, all worth reading. An unquestionably good source A must have for anyone who loves the American theater, this book first crossed my path in college and a recent reading salon got me to crack it open and read it again. An unquestionably good source of material and inspiration alike. I think it fits with my own sense.

He gives a lot of background on the original productions of each play and how he came up with them, and also gives notes to actors playing some of the roles in each. Jan 28, Cody rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: fags.

It proves that Durang, although absolutely crazy, is quite a genius.
